Marine Conservation Projects in St Kitts and Nevis

Ocean Science School
In summer 2025, we hosted our very first Ocean Science Summer Camps for children 5 to 12 years of age. The week-long programme offers a unique opportunity to learn about marine habitats and wildlife of St. Kitts and Nevis, current threats and sustainable solutions.
Each day is a different topic that children explore through hands-on science experiments, fun games, arts and crafts. From coral reefs to ocean currents, from climate change to overfishing, from microplastics to sustainable fishing, we are committed to bringing meaningful and action-oriented marine education.
Make sure to stay updated as we work towards establishing an Ocean Science School Programme that will bring marine education and conservation into the classrooms of St Kitts and Nevis.
Sea Urchin Studies And Ecosystem Restoration
In the last few decades, the long-spined sea urchin (Diadema Anthillarum) suffered two massive die-offs that wiped out 97% of populations across the Caribbean. Today, only 20% of the population is estimated to have recovered, leaving most reefs with low numbers of this ecologically significant species. Because Diadema are key grazers that keep algae under control, their decline has contributed to a phase-shift allowing coral-dominated reefs to become overgrown with algae. Near-shore reefs in St. Kitts and Nevis are particularly affected by this macroalgae overgrowth, threatening reef health and the species that depend on it.

By providing education on environmentally conscious practices, we can help these communities implement changes that benefit both their livelihoods and the ecosystem.

Community Beach Clean-Ups
Since 2024, Blue Conscience has been organising regular ‘1-Hour-Power-Beach Cleanups’ that have turned into an awaited monthly-catch up by our volunteers. You give back to the island by donating 1 hour of your time and we provide the rest. When removing ocean trash from our beaches, volunteers also become citizen scientists. In fact, our cleanups contribute to valuable data collection on ocean pollution. Every piece of litter recorded is sent to the Ocean Conservancy International Coastal Cleanup Repository, which includes data from all over the world and publishes yearly reports on the status on our coastlines.
